Unimed: a clinical app in 4 weeks instead of 8 months

Brazilian healthcare network Unimed Vale do Sinos replaced paper records and three inconsistent tech stacks with Mendix: 5 apps, 30 microservices and twice as many medical exams scheduled year over year.

The challenge

Unimed’s hospitals, clinics and care centers ran on paper, while IT maintained three separate tech stacks: Python, Node.js and PHP. Each needed its own specialists, the architecture drifted apart, and new software took 6 to 8 months to arrive.

What Mendix did

In 2023 Unimed moved application development to one low-code platform. The first clinical app, a virtual check-in that streams patient vitals straight to doctors, was built in a month by an analyst, not a professional developer. Digital infirmary panels, ER kiosks and an HR portal followed, and average delivery time dropped from 6-8 months to 2.

Results

1 month
first clinical app
2 months
delivery time (from 6-8 months)
more exams scheduled year over year

What it means for your business

Healthcare organizations know this picture: paper records, a rigid HIS and changes that take quarters to ship. Mendix lets the people who know ward processes build the tools, under IT governance, integrated with ERP and compliant with GDPR. Results show up in weeks, not years.

This is an edition of our “Powered by Mendix” newsletter. Every two weeks, one real deployment with metrics and context.
